Regulatory Energy Transition Accelerator

Network Planning for wide scale electrification

Meeting the technical challenges of expanding power systems.

Network planning is essential to expanding electrification; however, it easily encounters challenges due to high costs and complicated technical issues. Therefore, RETA aims to provide several deliverables: First, the IEA will launch an investigation into the supply chain cost of transmission infrastructure. Second, GET.transform is working on standardized regulatory frameworks to accelerate mini-grid deployment in Africa. Lastly, RMI is exploring a new project that focuses on the future of gas and aims to avoid the lock-in of stranded assets.

Report launch: Building the Future Transmission Grid

The urgency to expand and modernize electricity transmission networks is putting increasing pressure on global supply chains. A new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), published under RETA , explores how rising infrastructure needs are affecting component prices, lead times, and market dynamics.

For energy regulators, the report highlights the need for long-term procurement mechanisms and coordinated planning to avoid supply bottlenecks and ensure timely grid expansion. With insights from a 2024 industry survey, it offers actionable strategies to strengthen supply chains and support a secure, cost-effective energy transition.
