During the first week of COP29 in Azerbaijan, we launched a new Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) campaign, called Empowering Regulators for Accelerated Decarbonisation. It is co-led by Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, while the coordination role is performed by the 21st Century Power Partnership (21CPP) and the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP), the co-operating agents of this campaign.

As a knowledge partner to the campaign, RETA is proud to have supported the campaign’s development and launch. Over the next year(s), we will work together with the co-operating agents, member countries and other knowledge partners, the International Energy Agency (IEA), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Clean Energy Solutions Center (CESC), to advance the campaign’s goals.

The objectives of the campaign revolve around aligning regulatory actions with national climate and decarbonisation goals, underscoring targets like tripling renewables, tripling nuclear capacity, doubling energy efficiency. The campaign aims to contribute to this by strengthening dialogue between policymakers and energy regulators and identify strategies to empower regulators in driving the clean energy transition.

Our activities revolve take a two-pronged approach. On the one hand, we want to raise awareness of this topic on high-level forums, such as COP, G20, and CEM. While on the other hand, the campaign aims to support ministries through regional technical workshops, technical assistance, and in-depth reviews with a focus on identifying best practices for effective policy implementation.

We look forward to collaborative efforts that will help equip governments and regulators with tools and strategies to drive decarbonisation.
